Marketing Basics: Perfecting Your Pitch

Poor salesman that I am, I usually hedge when people ask me what my book is about.

I do this for two reasons:

a)  Demographic reading this blog aside, the words "Jake Gyllenhaal" are often more likely to inspire concern over my mental wellbeing than interest in buying my book.

b)  It's possible I don't know what the book is about.

It's kind of like asking what life is about.  Who even knows?  And the book's about life.  But with Jake Gyllenhaal.

About a year ago, when all I had to my name was a Word document and delusional visions of grandeur (for it's always easier to envision your successes in life before you've put yourself out there), I took a continuing education class to learn how to become published.  I was a few minutes late to class, so the only seat was in the very back row.  Everyone else had already gone around to talk about their book ideas; before I even sat down, I was prompted, "So what's your book?"

"It's called I'm Stalking Jake!  It's about a blog I used to write," I said.

"Interesting," said The Professor.

"Yeah, the blog was actually about Jake Gyllenhaal.  You know, the actor?"

And in complete seriousness, The Professor asked, "Oh?  Were you and Jake an item?"

Every female head in the room turned around in unison to look at me.

I was still laughing five minutes later.

No, that's not what the book is about.

(But I will continue to actively encourage anyone who has read it to try to sum it up.)

Some guy...I don't know his name...

Prophecy Girl's Fame Knows No Bounds

The Pixel Project, kindly engaging in my delusions that I still have some sort of influence on the fan community, asked me to guest-blog on their site!  The Pixel Project, as you may recall, is a charity organization working to bring awareness about violence against women, and Jake is one of 5 celebrities whom you can vote for as good Male Role Model.  I was asked to explain, in 350 words or fewer, why Jake is a great choice.  So...

...EXCITING GUEST-BLOGGING SPOT HERE.

(Strangely enough, they seem to have rejected my original blog title:  "Why I Think of Jake Gyllenhaal When I Think of Violence Against Women.")

(Also, if you haven't yet signed the petition or voted then go for it because, again, these people think I actually have some sort of power and due to deep personal insecurities I'm not about to tell them otherwise.  Voting ends June 17!)

Unrelated:  The picture set posted earlier has now been expanded to include shots of Jake and Maroon 5 frontman/former Jake classmate Adam Levine.  The PG from 2005 is freaking the hell out right now.

I was once close enough to Adam Levine at a concert that we were singing to each other.  It is a memory I hold dear and I'm sure he does too (he was enthralled -- I'm very hot -- and later named an acoustic EP in honor of my 21st birthday).  In fact, my best guess would be that Jake and Adam were discussing me while sitting in this car, since both of them have had the remarkable and much coveted experience of being in my presence.

Though looking at these pictures, I have to say that they are so much less cool without me...

But anyway, the point of this entry was to tell you about the Pixel Project thing.  Which took me much longer to write than the post you just read. :)
