Hey, Did You Hear the One About the Helicopter?

Last week, several gossip sites reported that Jake and Taylor Swift had called the cops on the paparazzi and, in response, the LAPD sent a helicopter for their protection.  Whether or not this was necessary has become an issue of some debate, particularly since the last time we saw Jake and Taylor together, they were treating the paparazzi a little differently...

So what does Jake really think about photographers?  It's a rite of passage for every fan community to argue over it and Jake's fans are notorious for loving this particular fight.  My own hopelessly vague conclusion can be found in the second-to-last chapter of a certain book I wrote...but you can't blame those of us on the ground for being confused.

Here's Jake loving the attention:

And here's Jake hating it:

Hate:

This post doesn't really have a point.  I just wanted to throw out this observation...

Jake has to get a reality check. You're an actor, the first thing that goes is your privacy. AND if you're living in the LA area and travel right into pap country why should you be surprised if they take pics or follow your car/motorcycle. ALSO if you are going to be seen with high profile women/girls don't be surprised if your on their radar even more and they follow you everywhere (not to mention fans who tweet where you are and take pics of you and post them online)

oh this is so funny, i had forgotten about the jumper of the head picture! Jakey poo you really are a moody one arnt you??!!

Call Me Mo December 13, 2010 at 4:45 PM

Oh wow. I hadn't heard about the "emergency" helicopter.

Most celebrities have a love/hate relationship with the paps. They "love" them when it's convenient.

Becky Heineke December 13, 2010 at 5:30 PM

^^^ Exactly. And also (less commonly) the reverse, of "hating" them when it looks best.

I remember when that picture of him with the jacket on his head came out and I was *so* horrified. Like, HOW AWFUL that he was that upset!! We shouldn't even be *looking* at stuff like that!!

And now? I'm a hardened cynic who didn't think twice about posting that picture. It's no wonder we're all perennially confused about where we're supposed to stand on these issues... :)

Monica December 13, 2010 at 5:48 PM

He was not upset because they took pictures of him, but because had 10 cars of paparazzi following his car and he was scared of what might happen.

It is not the first time that the X17 does it with Jake.

I just thought about what I wrote above and I worded that very, very poorly. Under no circumstances am I on the side of the paparazzi, nor would I ever disregard the genuine invasion of privacy that often comes with having photographers follow your every move. Nor would I make light of the stress and distress that comes from that, or say that those incidents in which celebrities snap aren't sometimes fully warranted.

My point is more that we, as consumers, are being sold an image when it comes to the celebrities we follow, and that we shouldn't be so naive as to take everything we see at face value, regardless of what that image is.

Personally, I think Jake's image is inconsistent. Thus the post...so maybe I had more of a point in this entry than I thought. :)

Well I thought the post today was a fun one PG. I had a crappy day at work all day, so I didn't get a chance to comment until now.

Personally I detest the papz, as they mostly get way out of line & can be downright dangerous to the celebs as well as innocent bystanders. But then they do serve a purpose for publicity when the celebs want to use them. So, it is a fine line we all tread when it comes to whether or not to check out all the photos from the papz. I do like poking fun at all of it as well as reading other peeps' funny comments though. Any kind of humor helps me get thru my days. ^_^

I don't think someone's occupation EVER gives the Paparazzi or the general public to invade a person's privacy. Pictures of a celebrity taking out the trash or going for a coffee run (as mundane as that is...) is fine to a certain extent, but hawking them for a "money shot" is just disgusting.

But I'm aware that as a celebrity/actor paparazzi become part of the job description. But just because I understand that doesn't mean I condone it.

BUT, that being said, great post. Jake is very inconsistent...like his body of work too.

OH SNAP.

Sam December 14, 2010 at 2:23 AM

total snap KD!!

Am i really shallow in saying that i hope to see some paps in NY while im there... i at least want to see one famous person!!!

Sasha,  December 14, 2010 at 7:22 AM

I can only just second was has been said: They love the paps whenever it is convenient to them - and they act like little children when it is inconvenient.

And that behaviour actually gets me pissed with every celebrity ... be there when I want you to but leave me alone on every other occasion ... that just doesnt work with anything in life

When it comes to the paps: They do a job that serves a purpose that comes from everyone who reads magazines and stuff - it wasn't as bad 20yrs before and earlier - but coz it is like this today the celebrities earn wayyyyy more than their "former generations".

Do the paps cross lines: Yes they do - coz of the money they earn from those pics. To me that is fine as long as no one gets hurt physically or at times when emotional distress (for example break ups or deaths and stuff) are part of it.

BUT if you are celebrity you sure have enough money to live any place you want - why living at place where the paps are like bees around the honey-pie?
More than enough celebrities lead a life that is next to not published.

So, my bottome line is: It's your choice dear celebrity - make it and live with it.

Sorry for that extra long post - but just at the moment there is so much I've never been aware of on many levels that I felt like stating it.

Sasha,  December 14, 2010 at 7:23 AM

oh and now everyone feel free to mock me for not dissing the paps

Vanessa December 14, 2010 at 9:12 AM

WOW!!! Jake & Anne were both nominated for a Golden Globe for best actor & actress in a musical or comedy for LAOD! I love it, that is wonderful news! I know the chances are slim that they will win with the noms they are up against, but at least they were nominated.

gyllenhaalisgr8 December 14, 2010 at 9:21 AM

YEAY -- Jake & Anne just got nominated for Golden Globe Awards for L&OD!!

gyllenhaalisgr8 December 14, 2010 at 9:23 AM

Sorry, Vanessa...I got so excited I didn't see your post! But it doesn't hurt to announce it twice!!

Vanessa December 14, 2010 at 9:28 AM

No problemo, gyllenhaalisgr8! I totally agree, it doesn't hurt to shout it from the rooftops as much as possible! I think they totally deserve it too. >;-)

Keep posting stuff like this i really like it

Becky Heineke December 14, 2010 at 12:04 PM

^^^ I shall try. :)

When I saw the GG announcements this morning, I have to admit I was a little shocked that Jake was nominated! But good for him! :)

Sasha, I agree with what you wrote. Until not that long ago, I never realized that paparazzi shots were *ever* set up. Now, I probably look at pictures almost too critically in the other direction. Out of all the gas stations in LA, a photographer just happened to be there (camera in hand) when a celebrity drove up? Out of all the rumored dates and Twitter sightings of a new couple, there were never any magazine-ready photos until opening weekend? So much of what we're "sold" is really carefully planned, scheduled, and done with all parties fully aware of what's going on (except for us, the public)...

I guess it's just sad that we're moving further and further away from selling the art that celebrities make and instead making the celebrity at the center the product. There are lots of celebrities who don't play that game, who don't live in LA, and who are actually on good terms with photographers and thus have their privacy treated somewhat differently than others. I'm saying all of this very generally here...but, as usual, I like to use Jake as a launching pad to get to the bigger issues. ;)

At any rate, we can all agree he - quite visibly - has his moments on both sides of the spectrum... :)
