Top 5 Jake Movies. Go.

1.  Brokeback Mountain.  Because who doesn't love sheep?

2.  Donnie Darko.  Because I always wanted to meet a Donnie in high school so we could make out and then both prematurely die in alternate universes.

3.  Prince of Persia.  Because my favorite movie of 2008 was The House Bunny, so I'm moving up in the world.

4.  Jarhead.  BECAUSE OF THE SANTA DANCE.

5.  Zodiac.  Because serial killers who terrorized California in the late 1960s are kind of an interest of mine.

Runner-up:  Bubble Boy.  Because...just because.

So...what about you guys?  How do you like your Jake?

Pictures:  sheep, House Bunny, Santa Dance, Charles Manson, Bubble Boy.

OMG, PG, that is hysterical. I about spewed water on my monitor! LOVE the Santa dance from JH...

This is a great post, I will have to seriously give this some thought first as I am one of those weirdos that love ALL his movies, although I suppose some are better than others... Not to mention, I am SUPPOSED to be working right now. OK, nuff said, damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead! I'm ON it!

Be back later... >;-)

1. BBM. Jack and Ennis forever!

2. Donnie Darko. Didn't understand a lot of it but still really enjoyed the ride. And it's got a giant psycho bunny in it. What's not to like?

3. Moonlight Mile. That scene at the dinner table where he explains to the stupid woman why he hasn't had time to "get over" the death of his girlfriend is one of my favorite performances of Jake in any of his movies.

4. Jarhead. For the Santa hat dance and the voiceovers. OMG how I love those voiceovers...

5. Bubble Boy. It's the silliest movie ever but so much fun.

1. Zodiac, I could watch this again and again just for the lake and the cellar scenes.

2. BBM, the film that made me a Jake fan.

3. Donnie Darko, weird but I love it.

4. Rendition, it is very underrated IMO and Jake looks so hot in this film.

5. PoP, The Good Girl, MM, Jarhead, Brothers, it's too difficult to chose.

"Because who doesn't love sheep?"
LMAO
Very compelling list, PG, haven't seen the House of Bunny myself, but I just might now.
Mine would be
1.Donnie Darko (fondness for deep depressing stuff)
2.Bubble Boy (fondness for endearing insane stuff)
3.Brokeback Mountain (fondness for tragic love stories)
4.Prince of Persia (mega fondness for magical adventures set in exotic places)
5.The Good Girl (because I always wanted to meet a Holden in high school so we could make out in the store room)

Because who doesn't love sheep?

LMAO! Oh, PG, how I love you. :-)

1. Brokeback Mountain.
2. Brokeback Mountain.
3. Brokeback Mountain.

Alright, I know. You get the point.

4. Moonlight Mile.
5. Donnie Darko.

Becky Heineke July 6, 2010 at 4:01 PM

^^^ I feel you on 1-3!!!

I had such a hard time choosing between Bubble Boy and Moonlight Mile. I'm could still switch my vote on that. You're right, Olympia. That scene at the dinner table is incredible. I still remember the first time I saw it, and that was WAY before I was a Jake fan...

HA! I'd love to make out with Holden in a store room, too...or the back of a car...

And Jake *does* look good in Rendition...

I love how so far all of these lists are so personal and tailor-made to everyone's interests. (I also love how everyone loves Donnie Darko! And who wouldn't? :D)

Anonymous,  July 6, 2010 at 4:21 PM

Jesus, I've just realized the film is actually called The House Bunny. Not quite the same as the House of Bunny, yeah, some dirty thoughts here. I blame the Jarhead Santa beneath the Bunny poster for these blunders.
And PG, I'm not exaggerating when I say this - I have NEVER met anyone who disliked Donnie Darko. Even people who don't like Jake say they like that movie and always profess amazement at how good Jake's in it.

Sam July 6, 2010 at 4:37 PM

1. Jarhead- Because how can you pass up Jake in (half) a uniform? Seriously.

2. Brothers-REALLY good story-line, a perfect me movie, and BONUS- Jakes in it too!

3. BBM - Cause it melts my heart every time

4. Prince of Persia- Cause he is in it 99% of the time

5. Proof- Cause nerdy Jake is just too cute.

Katie,  July 6, 2010 at 4:55 PM

I must rate my Jake?! Pardon the sarcasm...I'll take a whack at it:

1) Brothers - no one plays an ex-con quite like Jake. And no one's that hot while doing so.

2) Jarhead - I agree about the VOs, MMM! Also, my affinity with soldier movies reached a whole new level after I saw Jarhead. Jake deserves partial credit for that.

3) October Sky - why are you laughing? I thought he was darling as a rocket scientist. I loved the "almost" scene with that one girl.

4) Donnie Darko - although I was left so confused and wondering why Jake seems to have a thing with time travel-related film, I digress. Mostly the bonus disk made this one for me. And he's with Jena and she is about the only actress I am "OK with" when it comes to playing Jake's love interest. I had to re-play the first part of the make out dozens of times...those lips!!!

5) Proof - Only cause I have to have five...and he was quite endearing as a messy geek-a-zoid mathematician.

Sam July 6, 2010 at 5:05 PM

On my blog page it says there is only 2 comments, come into this section and there is 10. strange

Albatross,  July 6, 2010 at 5:23 PM

Oh, gosh...well, Brokeback is #1, of course. That was such a great performance.

#2 Donnie Darko. It's just so weird and intense.

#3 The Day After Tomorrow...because he just looks so darn GOOD in it!

#4 The Good Girl. Great performance, so sad and strange.

#5 Jarhead. Another knockout performance. And, yeah, there's the whole nudity thing. LOL

gyllenhaalisgr8 July 6, 2010 at 5:32 PM

After great soul searching, my top five Jakes are, in no specific order:

1. THE GOOD GIRL. Sensual, erotic, tragic Holden breaks my heart, even in the masturbation scene, sigh. Jake should get laid in every movie, just for our vicarios thrills.

HIGHWAY. OMG. Confused, stoned, totally adorable Pilot. How can you not want to pin him down and teach him a few things??

DONNIE DARKO. Another beautifully tragic character. The hoodies, the button-flies, the dick-diving. Strangely hot. Extremely sad.

BBM. Clean shaven (mostly), neat haircut, stuffed blue jeans. The new Romeo & Romeo. Soulful eyes, lips parting in anticipation, the passion, the frustration, face-stretching kisses and his tragic demise. Total viewer devastation.

JARHEAD. The acting. The body. The Santa Dance. The acting.

I could go on, but that is five. I hope it is only coincidence that in three of my five choices Jake's character dies. How very, very disturbing.

Call Me Mo July 6, 2010 at 5:57 PM

I wish this was LJ cuz then I could totally use my "You're just jelaous of my pornstache" icon. Bummer.

1. Bubble Boy. First Jake movie I ever saw and because ANYTIME is good for a Bubble Boy quote.

2. The Good Girl. Holden is totally the guy I would have a crush on.

3. Highway. I heart Pilot. =]

4. Donnie Darko. Needs no explanation. Seriously.

5.Zodiac/Moonlight Mile. I only saw Moonlight Mile recently but it totally fights for the 5th place with Zodiac now. I can't decide which character is more endearing.

Vanessa,  July 6, 2010 at 6:49 PM

I have been trying to finish my work all afternoon, but kept sneaking back to lmao at everyone's comments. You guys are so funny.
OK, here goes, I am obviously the oddball here as I am totally in love with Prince of Persia. OK, OK, I admit it isn't a better movie than BBM, but I can't hardly watch BBM right now without totally falling apart & I can watch PoP every day & never get tired of it.

So, tied for my number 1 is BBM & PoP - I am a sucker for a man with long hair & scruff, but Jack is indeed beautiful too.
2. Donnie Darko - what could I say that hasn't already been said? A demonic rabbit wreaking havoc with our fearless leader, what's not to love?
3. & 4. Sorry, but I have another tie, Rendition & Brothers. Rendition, OMG, when we first see our hero lusciously waking up half nude & then that erotic kissing scene, yeah baby. Plus he looked gorgeous in that movie. OK, Brothers, I love the performances most of all by both of them, but again Gylls looked hot & was super sexy in it even as a jailbird. You can handcuff me baby!
5. & last but not least, BUBBLE BOY!!! I love watching that movie, I laugh my ass off every time, never get tired of it.

I love the rest too, but they are not my top 5, Zodiac, The Good Girl, October Sky, Proof, & DaT, (in that order)

I never saw Highway or Moonlight Mile, so needless to say those are on my list to see asap. I know I will love both of them from what I have read here.

Vanessa,  July 6, 2010 at 7:11 PM

Damn, I just realized I left out JH, how could I do that? Not my favorite look for Jakey, although he filled out that Santa hat VERY well. Love the movie, don't love the look, not a fan of buzz cuts. His performance is outstanding in it for sure.

Becky Heineke July 6, 2010 at 7:29 PM

How funny that I said that about Donnie Darko and then Sam was the very next comment and DD wasn't in her top 5. :)

What I find so fascinating about this (because I'm a NERD...and I'm sure you all get sick of me talking about Jake Watch, but the differences are just so crazy and I can't help but compare!) is that with JW, EVERYONE came from BBM. Pretty much the whole fanbase (myself included) was a bunch of Brokeback fans looking for a home.

NOW, people come from all different movies, and a lot of the movies that you guys like, like Highway, are ones no one used to even talk about.

I also love that Brothers and Rendition are getting a lot of love...

Is there any correlation between your favorite movie and when you became a fan? I became a fan with BBM, and watched DD shortly thereafter. I may have always wound up liking those two best, but I was really excited about having "found" Jake at that time, so they have nostalgic meaning on top of entertainment value. :)

Becky Heineke July 6, 2010 at 7:30 PM

P.S. Lena, don't judge me when/if you watch The House Bunny!! ;D I have no idea why I thought it was so funny, but occasionally my taste in pop culture veers off in completely weird directions. My brother bought me the DVD for me for my birthday last year and he *still* brings up how embarrassing it was for him to stand in the checkout line at Best Buy to buy it. :D

KD,  July 6, 2010 at 7:47 PM

1. BBM. Who can resist Jack Nasty? Whoops, I meant Jack Twist!

2. PoP. Dastan and his biceps. Plus a British accent.

3. Brothers. Under appreciated performance. Very powerful film.

4. Jarhead. His scary real performance in that film made me so uncomfortable.

5. Donnie Darko/October Sky. I JUST CAN'T CHOOSE ONE. so I choose both and essentially cheat.

KD,  July 6, 2010 at 7:59 PM

PG, there is a def. correlation between my favorite film and when I became a fan.

I, believe it or not, watched BBM the day it came out in wide release and immediately fell in LOVE with Jake. I thought Heath did a great job carrying the film, but for me, Jake stole the entire damn show. I just could not FEEL for that man.

After that, he did Jarhead, which I actually didn't watch immediately because it was rated R and I was... eleven? at that time (Yes, I'm a very old soul. It's quite sad, actually). Even though my mother offered to buy me the ticket, I felt compelled to wait until I learned about the Gulf War. (So I actually didn't watch Jarhead until this year after taking AP US History!)

After BBM, I took a small break from Gyllenhaal and then in 2007 watched Zodiac and Rendition. While both are admirable movies (especially Zodiac, which I now think is fantastic!), I wasn't too into it so I stopped following Jake until...DUN DUN DUN, Prince of Persia.

PoP caused my inner Jake fan to REAWAKEN and after that I've been on a streak. I only have a few more films before I've watched all of them.

KD,  July 6, 2010 at 8:00 PM

I just could not NOT feel for that man*

Correction!!

Call Me Mo July 6, 2010 at 8:05 PM

The House Bunny is hilarious!! :D

"Do you guys know where the crapper is? I have to drop some timber."
"You're like a supermodel. Except more pregnant."
"I gotta meet this freaking bird!"

Anonymous,  July 6, 2010 at 8:14 PM

PG, I've known about Jake since BBM but at that time I was very much into Heath so Jake kinda floated under my radar (blasphemy, I know, what was I thinking?? must've been my unbalanced hormones as I was coming out of puberty)
Then last year I found out they were doing POP (I've been a fan of that game since I was 8)and I realized dude from BBM was in it and I saw pics from the set and my mouth fell open, the whole WHOA scene Matrix style, and I went back to watch BBM and shifted my attention to Jack Nasty and I was blown away and angry for not realizing sooner what a gem I've been missing! Then I started collecting Jake's movies and now I'm just hoping I don't turn into Eminem's Stan.
So I don't know whether it matters at what point one becomes a Jake fan, though the first movie I saw after BBM was Donnie Darko so... But DD is my type of movie, I love twisted stuff like that.

And no worries about House Bunny, you wouldn't believe the silly stuff I watch...

Becky Heineke July 6, 2010 at 8:32 PM

I feel much better about my House Bunny love knowing that Mo can quote from it! I may or may not have been addicted to The Girls Next Door for years and thus now have a soft spot for most Playboy-related ventures... :)

Lena and KD, I feel like my experience is split right between yours. I actually remember Jake back from October Sky (I distinctly recall telling my parents afterward that the movie was "alright" but I couldn't get over how much "the guy with the weird name looks like Tobey Maguire" HA!). But it wasn't until BBM that everything changed. I was a Heath fan long before I was a Jake fan, and so I saw Brokeback as much for Heath as I did for Jake. But I was completely won over after that. I also remember not hardly being able to believe it when I started looking back and realized that Jake was the guy from Bubble Boy...but then completely warming to that movie once I actually saw it. :)

Interestingly, Rendition and Brothers are not favorites of mine, and they both came at hard times for me during my life as a fan, so again, it's strange how that correlation works.

Also strange that I was originally VERY skeptical of Prince of Persia and then I wound up loving it. :) I guess if anything, I've learned not to trust my first opinion on anything Jake-related!

Leslie July 6, 2010 at 9:59 PM

Okay, I think I'm the weirdo here . .

1. Moonlight Mile - when he's standing in front of the jukebox I melt every time.

2. Donnie Darko - A friend told me to see this movie and I had no idea Jake was the lead and it had been so long since I saw him in a movie (see #3). Oh. My. God.

3. A Dangerous Woman - The first time I ever saw him. I thought he was so cute. I distinctly remember thinking, "this guy is gonna grow up to be drop dead beautiful." How right I was.

4. Brokeback Mountain - I just recently got the blu-ray after only having seen it in the theatre. I don't know why I didn't remember a whole part of the movie - I thought it just ended when he came to see him again and Michelle saw them kiss. It broke my heart all over again. This is the kind of movie that stays with you for days.

5. Every other movie he's ever been in. Seriously. I like all the rest! I can't pick a fifth!

Vanessa,  July 6, 2010 at 10:13 PM

I love all these comments today with all you guys telling when you "found" your love for Jake. & I have been laughing all day, this is the greatest place to call a 2nd home.

I have to say I have followed his career for years, it started with DD back in '02 & I always loved watching him in everything after that, but didn't fall in LOVE with him until Prince Dastan hit the screen. I love bizarre movies so DD was right up my alley. I was a major Heath fan since the beginning of his career too, so BBM is very special to me, but extremely sad for me as well. I personally think BBM was Jake's absolute crowning glory & the BEST movie he has made so far. He deserved the Oscar for that movie without a doubt & Heath did too.

OK, on a less serious note, PG, I have to tell you, I LOVE The House Bunny, I laughed my ass off, Anna Faris is a scream. It is just great silly fun & I highly recommend it to everybody.

KD,  July 6, 2010 at 11:38 PM

WHOA, LENA. A Dangerous Women? Dude, that was made in 1993. Man, you're really pulling out all the stops here! Haha, I have never and don't really plan on watching any of Jake's movies before October Sky. He's just too young and usually his part is way too small for more to even get through the entire film. Of course, the exception would be if the movie itself is good. Then I'd watch it just for the film itself.

PG. That's totally cool man, we all have our preferences. I sometimes can't stomach watching Bubbleboy from second hand embarrassment, even though I find the movie hilarious. If I wasn't a Jake fan, I'd probably have no problem watching it either!! I was never much of a Heath fan, although I did like him in 10 Things I Hate About You and The Dark Knight. I actually didn't find his performance in BBM very inspiring.

This is really off topic, but whenever I think of Naomi Foner (Jake's mom), I always picture Jodie Foster (who i adore). WHY?!

Sam July 7, 2010 at 3:32 AM

Im surprised that there isnt more about Brothers! Honestly, it nearly tied for number one for me! And i havnt watched Highway, moonlight Mile, or the Good girl in forever, i should get back to them soon i think!

Leslie, i must be the worst fan, but A Dangerous Woman? How did i miss this one?!

And PG, I do like DD i think it would have been next on the list, but unfortunately for me i had a very realistic nightmare the night i watched this (im still not sure if it really did happen) It invovled a rabbit and some very strange noises that only i could hear, ill explain more another day but it kinda put a downer on the whole Darko movie for me!

Becky Heineke July 7, 2010 at 10:24 AM

Leslie, so many bonus points for A Dangerous Woman; that's a total wild card answer and therefore AWESOME. I first saw that movie because I was writing an essay about it for this Stephen Gyllenhaal film blog I was writing for (the Gyllenhaal family has gotten so much free publicity from me over the years...) and I had no idea Jake was in the movie until I saw him. I was way excited. :) He's a total brat in the movie and he's only in it briefly, but even then, he was a good actor!

Vanessa, I wholeheartedly agree on BBM. Jake's extremely talented, but his performance in that was off the charts. Incredible. (And I'm glad you like The House Bunny too! Who knew there were so many of us? :D)

KD, Jodie Foster?? HAHA!! I have no idea where that comes from...but that's really funny. :)

And Sam, a nightmare definitely would make an impact! And that one sounds terrifying... Also, I think I need to see Brothers again. I know you and I talked about our disagreements about it when it first came out, but I was also a little, er, stressed about things when I saw it so it's possible I'd feel differently about it now. It's actually been a really long time since I've watched most of Jake's movies...

Miffed67 July 7, 2010 at 1:01 PM

1. BBM - I DO love sheep, they're made of wool!
2. Donnie Darko - never gets old, there's something new to discover every time I see it.
3. Bubble Boy - it's the hair. Really.
4. Highway - BEEP. Gold Star!
5. Prince of Persia - those arms? That costume? Leaping over tall buildings? How can you not love THAT?

Anonymous,  July 7, 2010 at 2:53 PM

1.October Sky
2.PoP
3.Moonlight Mile
4.Day After Tomorrow
5. Bubble Boy

No explanation needed for any of the choices...he's amazing in everything!
